Saints Fall In Conference Tournament Championship Match

NOTRE DAME, Ind. --- Seeking its third upset of a ranked foe in April as well as its first Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Tournament title in school history, the University of St. Francis came up on the short end of a 4-0 decision to NAIA No. 18-ranked Holy Cross College on Friday afternoon at the University of Notre Dame tennis courts.

Ten days after upsetting Holy Cross (12-7) by a 4-3 count back on April 18, the Saints could not earn a match victory before Holy Cross hit the four-win mark on Friday.  USF was leading in the other three matches that went unfinished.

Like it did previously, Holy Cross gained its first point of the match by sweeping its three doubles contests.  The hosts also claimed wins at Nos. 5 and 6 singles like ten days earlier.  The difference this time was HCC's Kia Carvalho-Landell posting a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles after dropping a 6-4, 6-0 decision the first time the two foes met.

In the other three incomplete matches, Anna Bintsarovskaya was ahead 7-5, 4-3 at No. 1 singles, Lieke Coenen was on the verge of winning at No. 3 – up 6-1, 5-4 – and Denisse Lizano had a 6-2, 2-3 advantage at No. 4.

The loss ended USF's season at 14-8 overall, a campaign in which the Saints earned a share of the regular-season conference crown for the first time since 1984 with its 5-1 CCAC mark.  St. Francis was also among other teams receiving votes in the final NAIA Coaches' Poll.
